Chicago Afrobeat Project
Description
The Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) is inciting a resurgence of West African traditions and blending contemporary influences to create a mix of hot grooves that is both fresh and expertly crafted. Numbering anywhere from 8-12 members, CAbP consists of a full horn section, an assortment of percussion, and guitar, bass and keyboards. The troupe is ever-evolving-and the contributors bring their eclectic backgrounds and skills together on stage and in the studio. In an interview with WBEZ, founding member and percussionist Marshall Greenhouse explains the importance of this diversity, "...this is the idea-to be always evolving-to cultivate those different backgrounds, while keeping the afrobeat foundation to the sound." This documentary-style short offers the viewer and in-depth look into one inventive band's journey into new musical territory. It features vibrant footage and the live sounds of a 2006 performance at the Hanger 9 in Carbondale, IL and the voices of the band's founding members. The video effectively captures the band's energizing performance, while placing the viewer both on the dance floor and over-the-shoulder of the players. The interviews take the viewer backstage for an intimate conversation that offers a deeper understanding of the music and the characters that are driving it.
